Great to hear talks from Dacorum Council, Ordnance Survey and Public Health in Hertfordshire. The lessons I took away were:

Research in partnership with other Local Authorities. Requires time to manage the partnership, but does deliver stronger research with comparative figures.

How to work across an organisation through training, support and the development of tools to be used. Including promoting the use of common terms and language.

The need and value to look at what you do and be prepared to change it to give people what they need.

Share and promote what works e.g. https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/business-and-government/case-studies/

Many thanks to Dacorum Council for hosting.

Presentations are available on request, please email richard.potter@analyticscambridge.co.uk

The Campaign Company has recently published a comment piece discussing the issues surrounding the analysis of international migration at a local level, particularly those relating to the paucity of research data on the subject. The article makes particular reference to a report on migration in the East of England, which concludes that the lack of a single data source on migrant communities is impeding councils’ ability to design and provide services that reflect the needs of their local residents. The article then moves on to argue that local authorities in areas with particularly high migration rates ought to collaborate in order to produce a shared data resource covering demographics, employment details, housing, health, lifestyle and values. Council officers could then use this information in order to help plan work relating to community engagement and cohesion.

Oliver Barnes is scoping a research project on the link between mental health and financial inclusion in the Bedwell ward of Stevenage.

Oliver and colleagues from Stevenage Borough Council are interested in producing a piece of research investigating whether people in this deprived area are more prone to mental health issues as a direct result of debt and debt repayment techniques.

This technically sits in the East region, but the character of Bedwell may be more similar to certain area of London. Are any LARIA members doing any work of this subject or are you aware of any research on this more generally?

Let us know if you can help!

Oliver can be contacted by email at Hertfordshire County Council
