SUMMARY:LARIA Spring 2022 Webinar 3
DESCRIPTION:Visual Analytics: Targeting Preventative Wellbeing Visits\nJohn will show how Excel and Tableau were used to undertake visual analytics on spatial and demographic data from open public sources\, Acorn geodemographics\, and management information systems. The analysis was used to define a target audience for communications and marketing staff to support the delivery of additional ‘Safe and Well’ visits from the Fire and Rescue service to those who would be most likely to benefit from them.\nJohn Courouble\, Head of Data\, Analytics\, and Visualisation\, Oxfordshire County Council \nImplementing PowerBi: the essentials\nMany organisations are now seeing PowerBI as a potential solution for their data analysis and dissemination needs. Whilst no-one can question the ‘power’ of this tool\, there are practical and financial considerations that you’ll need to think about before embarking on your PowerBI journey.\nIn this session we’ll talk about the essentials for a successful implementation of PowerBI based on our experience and the lessons we learned.\nRichard Palmer\, Chief Operating Officer\, Data Cymru \nTell Me With My Eyes: Using video for impact and influence\nWe do research with the intention of creating change. Usually\, though\, there’s at least one layer between us as researchers and the change that needs to be made. These layers are made up of decision-makers\, budget-holders\, policymakers and other interested parties who are already invested in the area we’ve been looking at: that’s why we’ve been asked to do the research.\nVideo can be an incredibly powerful tool for influence\, as well as being an excellent means of gathering research data.\nUrban designer Nat Roberton and researcher will talk you through how and why they used video to deliver impactful insights about the experience of navigating Bristol.\nThis talk will give you the inspiration and confidence to build video into your own research deliverables\, letting your participants answer difficult questions for you and helping your decision-makers reach a deep empathy for their users.\nKat Thackray\, Lead consultant (user research and service design)\, Mace & Menter & Nat Roberton\, Bristol City Council \nWebinars are available to Full Individual Members\, Corporate Members\, Full Corporate Members and Additional Contact members only. If you are not currently a member\, please sign up to membership to access the webinars recordings. For more details on the benefits of membership\, please see here. \n\n\n\nLoading…

SUMMARY:LARIA Spring 2022 Webinar 2
DESCRIPTION:Giving a voice to survivors of domestic abuse\nThis session will showcase our research with survivors of domestic abuse and how we worked closely with local partners to engage with diverse cohorts. It will also demonstrate the importance of providing choice to participants in terms of ways to share their views. We will also consider the importance of researcher wellbeing\, and the value of being part of a community of practice group with peers in other local authorities.\nPoppy Reece\, Senior Researcher & Maura O’Malley\, Researcher\, Essex County Council \nChanging the culture: exploring research capacity in local government\nLocal government is ideally placed for addressing health inequalities and influencing the health of individuals and communities in England. Yet\, there are very limited research systems that exist within local government to support their ability to create and synthesis the evidence needed for preventative and public health interventions. This session will share the findings of two research studies conducted in neighbouring local authorities in the north of England. Both studies used an Embedded Research approach to data collection. This approach has been used in other work as a mechanism to facilitate understanding of the cultures of local government\nDelegates will learn a range of short\, medium and long term actions that could support them to developing a sustainable research system within their local authority. Thus\, having the potential to impact on the health of residents and reducing health inequalities. The session will highlight implications for local government and how to reconfigure the relationship between research\, evidence and decision-making in public health.\nThe session will also share a summary of the embedded research approach and its potential to provide a boundary spanning role between local government and academic institutions.\nDr Catherine Homer\, Senior Research Fellow\, Sheffield Hallam University & Dr Susan Hampshaw\, Head of Service (Public Health Delivery)\, Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council \n\nWebinars are available to Full Individual Members\, Corporate Members\, Full Corporate Members and Additional Contact members only. If you are not currently a member\, please sign up to membership to access the webinars  recordings. For more details on the benefits of membership\, please see here.\n\n\n\n\nLoading…

SUMMARY:LARIA Spring 2022 Webinar 1 - CACI
DESCRIPTION:Tackling the Cost of Living Crisis with data\nThe Cost of Living Crisis is high on the political and media agenda. Local Authorities are on the front-line and need to know the likely scale of the impacts and identify those most likely to need support as a result of the rapid rise in living costs. \nUsing publicly available and widely available commercial data CACI will provide their views on:\n• The extent of the crisis\n• The extent to which consumers are changing\, and planning to change\, their behaviours\n• The demographic groups and local areas most at risk from the crisis based on the above evidence. \nThe session will provide practical advice on how the use of such datasets can enable Local Authorities to monitor\, understand and address the needs arising at a local level.\nPaul Langston\, Associate Partner\, CACI \nWebinars are available to Full Individual Members\, Corporate Members\, Full Corporate Members and Additional Contact members only. If you are not currently a member\, please sign up to membership to access the webinar recordings. For more details on the benefits of membership\, please see here. \n\n\nLoading…

SUMMARY:What to do with all this data? – Developing platforms to analyse and share COVID-related data with professionals\, service users and citizens
DESCRIPTION:Building an integrated systems response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Bury Helen Smith\, Strategic Performance & Intelligence Manager\, Bury Council & Angela Partington\, Head of BI\, Bury CCG \nUsing Health\, Social Care\, Benefits and Troubled Families data to assess vulnerability during the COVID-19 pandemicTowards the end of March 2020 there was a recognition by Liverpool City Council and the NHS required a crisis identification system built in case there was unprecedented demand in the city caused by COVID 19. The aim was to link identifiable data to create a vulnerability index of individuals in case the prioritisation of food\, prescription deliveries and economic support or care packages was required. The delegates will learn about the data journey Liverpool have taken to develop a comprehensive data management system for the National Troubled Families Programme that is now utilised for multiple purposes in both strategic and operational arenas. The session will reflect upon how the COVID-19 pandemic has provided opportunities for greater data sharing across partners\, how on-going collaborations will provide a host of opportunities for analysing demand management data to become “pro-active” rather than “reactive” and the advancement of predictive analytics.John Bowers\, Liverpool Families Programme Data and Information Manager\, Liverpool City Council \nCoronaWatch: The Suffolk Covid-19 Data StoryLike many other local authorities\, Suffolk needed to adapt and innovate to analyse Covid-19 data. This session focuses on the development of Suffolk’s CoronaWatch products. We will dive into some of our intelligence products and explore: How pieced together different data and intelligence to improve our understanding of Covid-19 in Suffolk\, how we have used tools such as Power BI and R to complement our traditional public health analysis\, and how we have tried to manage the transition from ‘no data’ to ‘all data’ as part of our Covid-19 response. The CoronaWatch tools have enabled us to turn data into decisions\, and evidence into actionable insight!Natacha Bines\, Head of Population Insight\, Suffolk County Council \nDuring the webinar you will hear from the webinar sponsor OCSI. There is opportunity to book 121 meetings before and after the webinar to hear more about their work.

SUMMARY:The Devil is in the detail – Using small geography\, administrative data to understand and tackle the impact of COVID within authorities
DESCRIPTION:THE ROAD TO RECOVERY: where we have come from\, where we are going to……\nCACI last presented at the start of LARIA’s Autumn Webinar where we provided insights detailing how communities have changed and what needs to be done to operate safely\, sustainably and efficiently while continuing to deliver essential services in a post-lockdown world. To do this\, we use data to unlock the consumer\, to discover what they think\, how they behave\, where they go\, who they are and ultimately why they do what they do.\nWe will provide an update to our October presentation sharing our knowledge of working with the Public Sector at this time\, key insights gleaned from our ongoing survey work and provide you with our thoughts for the future that will help you when revisiting your recovery planning\, communications and engagement activities and how to sign-post communities and residents through their path back to reengagement.\nStewart Eldridge\, Associate Partner – Public Sector & Charlotte King\, Senior Consultant – Location Intelligence\, CACI Limited \nUsing ACORN segmentation to improve take-up of mass LFT Testing in Coventry\nLocal Authorities took on responsibility for COVID-19 mass testing using LFT tests in December 2020. As test data became available\, Coventry was keen to ensure that the profile of those taking-up the test reflected the overall profile of the population. In addition to socio-economic profiles\, ACORN profiling has been used to identify specific population market segments who are under-represented in take-up. Furthermore\, ACORN Knowledge has been used to identify comms channels and promotional techniques which are effective at improving messaging to the under-represented populations.\nDr Harriet Rowthorn\, Coventry City Council \nCovid-19 case disparities in Oxfordshire: postcode evidence\nThe Council will focus on how Covid-19 postcode-level case data\, in combination with CACI’s Acorn classification and the IMD 2019\, have been used to explore variation in the prevalence of Covid-19 across different demographic types within Oxfordshire.\nAttendees will learn about the methodology used for exploring the Oxfordshire trend in Covid-19 case disparities across Acorn types and IMD deciles.\nThis will be followed by a description of some of the (Oxfordshire-specific) insights derived using these methods\, such as: \n\nThe Acorn types most disproportionately affected by Covid-19 overall\nIdentifying outbreaks\nThe disproportionate concentration of Covid-19 cases within more deprived areas\, and how this has varied with lockdown restrictions\n\nAlick Bird\, Insight Analyst & John Courouble\, Business and Customer Insight Manager\, Oxfordshire County Council \nIf you are interested in finding out more about CACI Ltd and their work\, there is opportunity to book 121 meetings before and after the webinar.

SUMMARY:SRA National Conference
DESCRIPTION:‘Making the links: New directions for social researchers’ \nNow more than ever\, social researchers need to build strong connections outside our industry. Traditional boundaries between research methods have softened as researchers and funders recognise the value of combining approaches. Hard and fast divisions between academics\, practitioners and policy researchers are blurring. Researchers are increasingly collaborating with other professionals\, in fields such as bio-tech and engineering. And new opportunities arise as technology redraws the limits on data collecting\, data sharing and research dissemination. What challenges does this new landscape bring? \n

SUMMARY:How to increase the accuracy of your surveys by reducing your sample size
DESCRIPTION:Choosing the right sampling method\, be it cluster\, stratified\, sequential or simple\, can make a dramatic difference to the accuracy of your results. In some cases the best option can allow you to reduce your sample size and thus costs. Of course if you get it wrong you will pay the price\, so in this overview of the importance of sampling methods when designing your surveys\, Nigel Marriot will demonstrate how you can decide which to use with the help of some playing cards and your willing participation! \n
